The Green Man

The Green Man - work in progress

For thousands of years humans saw themselves as part of nature, but for centuries humans have separated themselves more and more from nature.

I am interested in the re-integration of humans back into nature. The Green Man, or Foliate Head, is a motif that goes back to medieval times of heads, surrounded by foliage. They adorn medieval and gothic churches and cathedrals throughout Europe. The Green Man motif seems to me to refer to a state of mind where humans understand their intimate relationship with nature,

In my practice I like to set up surreal images that look almost real but are not, and use my own identity in the work.

The first three images use the form of the famous Green Man of Sutton Benger Church in Wiltshire, England.

The face is a 3D print of my head. The birds are stuffed antiques.

The last three images use a life cast of my face, cast in resin. With the mask I have used leaves and projection, and placed the mask in woodland.
