About Andy Wiener

About The Artist

Born 1959, Andy Wiener was born and grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland and in the mid 1980’s studied photography at the Royal College of Art in London.

For over 30 years he has worked in the staged photography genre, often using photographic masks. In the 1990s his work was widely exhibited and published. Later he had a solo show at Street Level, Glasgow in 2012, and contributed to a group show at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London in in 2013/14.

Cautionary Tales, a monograph of his work, was published by Dewi Lewis in 1990, and in 2020, Visitation Scenes, a book of new work was also published by Dewi Lewis.

Alongside being a photographer, Wiener is a consultant psychiatrist. He graduated in medicine at Edinburgh and practices in child and young people’s mental health at the Tavistock Clinic in London. The common theme for both areas of his life is the exploration of what lies beneath the surface.

A note on the use of masks in his staged photography.

“I like the ‘anti-technology’ method of supporting a flat mask in front of the face. A contraption of spectacles, Sellotape, polystyrene, sticky hoop, and eye pads does the job. It is not Photoshop, but a performance in front of the camera, creating a visual illusion. A camera ‘sees’ in 2 dimensions (everything is rendered as a series of surfaces and planes), but when we look at a photograph, our brains interpret the image as 3 dimensional. Therefore, a 2D photographic mask will look the same as any other surface; from the ‘cyclops like’ view of the camera.”
