Religious Scenes

Religious Scenes were made in 1987 – 1988, using the textiles of Paola Cumiskey – a fellow student at the Royal College of Art – in many of the images. Wiener has been fascinated by Religious Iconography for many years, and each of these images is based on an Icon Painting, telling the story of the journey of Christ and his mother Mary from birth to ascension to heaven.

Religious icons show us the eternal heavenly truths, so photography (which records a moment of nature with all its blemishes) has no logical place in this art form. Again Wiener brings the old story up to date using modern references, such as the miracle of medicine, the temptations of consumerism, and the happiness that some people find by turning their back on the pursuit of wealth.
