Andy Wiener studied photography at the Royal College of Art between 1984 and 1986. His photographs are humorous but also challenging. The composition and style of the photographs are formal, but there is always a twist, usually an uncomfortable one.
His work is held in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and the Scottish Arts Council. Rather than being a photographer of reality, he photographs things that are going on under the surface, behind reality. Andy Wiener was part of a Scottish movement of photography in the late 1980's sometimes referred to as "Consructed Narratives" alongside other Scottish Photographers, in particular Calum Colvin and Ron O'Donnell. He does not make his living from photography, but qualified as a doctor (before going to the Royal College of Art) and subequently trained in psychiatriy at the Maudsley Hospital in London and the Taivistock Clinic in London. He now practices as a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist in North London. The investigation of the self, and the investigation of the unconscious, is a common thread that runs through his photographic and psychiatric practice.
